In Sydney, Australia, do you have to pay first and last month's rent up front?

I am thinking of moving to Sydney in about a year from now. What is the range of costs of apartments and do I have to pay first and last month’s rent up front there? About how much will I need to save for living for two weeks until I get a job?

You do have to pay so much in advance, plus a bond, but that will be the least of your worries.First of all you have to get a visa to work here & you must have one of the nominated professions required by immigrants. And get a job in two weeks? You must be kidding.I know several young people who looked for more then a year before finding work after finishing school & also a member of my family who moved to Sydney from Canberra with excellent training & references took over 5 months to get a similar position to his former one.I would estimate that you will need 400-500 per week to live on & that includes utilities, food, rent, transport etc.

Assuming you have the visa etc. Our rentals are advertised as $$$ per week – not $$$ per month. We need to pay 4 weeks bond plus 2 weeks ahead. Rental costs in the major cities for a bedsit or 1 bed flat are around $350 a week min. You will also need to have electricity which costs a little more than $100 to connect, a bit more than that for phone (and this is only for local calls – international calls you may need to pay a bond), the same amount for gas as well.
